La Malinche, or Malintzin in nahuatl, was a nahua woman from the Gulf of Mexico who has become a national symbol. She played a key role during the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. She was nahuatl interpreter, counselor and intermediary for the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, with whom she had a relationship.
